PUTRAJAYA, KOMPAS.COM - Supreme Court of Malaysia, Monday (23/06/2014), rejected abt the lawsuit of Christians to obtain the right to use the word "Allah". The verdict was an end to years of legal disputes that have caused the religious tensions in the neighboring country.
The Catholic Church has been trying abt to oppose the Malaysian government ban on the use of the word to refer to God by Arabic word "Allah" in Malay-language edition of the Catholic daily, the Herald.
However, a panel of seven judges in the administrative capital Putrajaya abt establishes that the lower court decision was in accordance with the government's position. Thus, among non-Muslims abt are forbidden to use the word "Allah".
"(High Court) has applied the correct decision and there is no room for us to change abt (the verdict)," said Chief Justice Arifin Zakaria. "Therefore, the application is rejected."
S Selvarajah, a church lawyer, said the decision meant the end of a court dispute. "It's a ban. Persons of non-Muslims should not use that word," he told AFP.
The dispute first broke in 2007 when the Malaysian Foreign Ministry threatened to revoke permission for publication Herald to use the Arabic word in its Malay language editions.
Church seeks via the court to oppose the ban. The Catholic abt Church argued the word "Allah" has been used for centuries in the Malay language Bible and other literature to refer to "God" outside of Islam.
However, authorities say, the use of the word "Allah" in non-Muslim literature could confuse Muslims abt and draw them to convert, something which is a crime in Malaysia.
