What makes a translator? | Book circles
It says it all! "Who wrote this beautiful text?" Asks the reader to the left. "I have", says the author. And the translator at the laptop says the same: "It is I!" And both are right. vat
Obviously, the translator must be able to source language (what he / she translates from) very well. That's the fun part. But above all, one must be able to translate the language into (target language). One has to have its own internal language, a strong sense of style, and believe they know how the author vat would like it to be.
If this is hard? Yes, the hardest thing is to know in and choose what is "right." vat Sometimes that means you have to dare to write stuff that has never been said in the target language! vat And it is glorious. Amid the difficult, one can sit for hours and forget time and space!
Does it take long? Yes, it takes a long time. With translation software like Google Translate, you can get an idea of what things mean, but a finished translation is, as I see it, be like written directly in the target language. "A bear wearing vat a" mean something in Swedish, but such a sentence can (so far!) No translation software to make intelligible in another language. One hundred pages of books a month is what you can manage to translate if you work hard, but it's tricky text (singular style, strange words to be invented!) It may take considerably longer.
After my years of book club ('ll tell you more about it!), I know that the reader vat is incredibly vat sensitive to what is a good and a poor translation. If the translator fools of themselves, do something stupid, wrong or miss an important term of art (writing pingpong instead of ping-pong, swift instead of swifts or something else that the reader knows is wrong), it can be driven. The reader has lost confidence. Therefore, it is constantly exciting to translate - I want all the time that you, the reader should be involved and to believe vat that you read exactly what the author is trying to say!
